Lake Taneycomo is known for its clear, cool waters – it's basically a big, beautiful river that thinks it's a lake. That means year-round fishing and some seriously hefty trout. We'll show you the best spots and techniques, whether you prefer to cast from the boat or try your luck along the shoreline. Just remember to grab your fishing license and trout permit before you come, and maybe pack a snack to keep your energy up while you're reeling 'em in.
On Lake Taneycomo, we use a mix of techniques to target trout. Drift fishing is a local favorite – we'll let the current do some of the work while we present our bait or lures to the fish. If the bite is slow, we might switch to trolling to cover more water. For bait, we often use natural options like worms or salmon eggs, but artificial lures like small spinners and jigs can be deadly too. We provide all the gear you'll need, including light to medium action rods perfect for fighting those spirited trout. Don't worry if you're new to these methods – we'll walk you through everything and have you fishing like a pro in no time.

Rainbow Trout: These guys are the stars of Lake Taneycomo. Known for their beautiful colors and acrobatic fights, rainbows here can range from pan-sized to trophy specimens over 20 inches. They're active year-round but really turn on in the cooler months. Rainbows in Taneycomo are known for their hard fights and tasty fillets – it's no wonder they're a favorite among our guests.
Brown Trout: While not as numerous as rainbows, the brown trout in Lake Taneycomo are the ones that keep anglers coming back for "just one more cast." These fish can grow to impressive sizes, with specimens over 30 inches not unheard of. Browns are a bit wilier than their rainbow cousins, often preferring to hang out in deeper holes or under cover. Landing a big brown is always a highlight of any trip – they're known for powerful runs and head-shaking jumps that'll test your skills and your gear.

Rainbow trout are a blast to catch here on Lake Taneycomo. These beauties usually run 12-20 inches and put up an impressive fight. You'll find them in the cooler, deeper parts of the lake, especially near structure like submerged logs or rocky areas. Spring and fall are prime seasons, but we catch them year-round. Rainbows are popular for their acrobatic leaps and the challenge they present - even experienced anglers get a thrill. They're also excellent eating if you want to keep a few for dinner. For best results, try drifting small nymphs or soft plastics near the bottom. A local secret is to use a micro jig tipped with a wax worm - the trout can't resist it. Just remember to use light line and set the hook quickly when you feel that telltale tap.
Brown trout are the prize catch in Lake Taneycomo. These guys are typically bigger than rainbows, averaging 2-5 pounds but sometimes topping 10. They're smart and wary, preferring deeper pools and undercut banks. Fall is the best time to target them, especially at dawn or dusk. Browns are known for their powerful runs and head-shaking jumps - landing one is a real accomplishment. Anglers love the challenge and the potential for a true trophy fish. They're also delicious if you decide to keep one. For the best shot at a big brown, try slow-trolling large minnow-imitating lures near the bottom. My go-to trick is using a nightcrawler on a drift rig, bounced slowly along deeper runs. Just be patient - these fish are cautious, but the payoff is worth the wait.
